Middle Class Indiana Families Get Help From Purdue

Since many middle income families do not qualify for Pell grants, this section of the economy often takes out loans to pay fir their children’s higher education.  Purdue University announced a scholarship that would help out some in this middle income category.

A limited number of students from middle-class Indiana families will be eligible for a hand-up from Purdue University under a newly announced scholarship program.

President France Córdova announced the Purdue Marquis Scholarship Program Friday to aid students with family incomes of $40,000 to $100,000 who generally turn to loans for higher education aid.

“This is targeted towards middle income families. These are families who are above the Pell Grant threshold of approximately $40,000,” she said. “Because they are, as you know, really strapped.”

Eligible students, starting with the incoming freshman for the 2009-10 school year, will receive up to $8,000 — $2,000 per year.

Scholarships are a necessity for many students who want to attend college.  Having further opportunities like this helps to keep the option open for students who would otherwise not qualify for aid.
