University of Alabama Huntsville Students Get Heard
ARTICLE TOOLS
Students from the University of Alabama Huntsville got an opportunity to speak with state lawmakers this week. The topic being tuition increases and budget cuts.
Higher Education Day is a chance for students from colleges and universities across Alabama to make enough to noise to be heard by their representatives. This year was especially important in convincing legislators to provide the best education available in light of the much-publicized budget cuts happening across all of the state’s education systems.
UAH just dealt with a 14% increase in tuition. College students can barely rub two coins together, and paying more money for school doesn’t improve our situation. However, the economic turmoil in our state necessitates this unfortunate upward trend. The purpose of Higher Ed Day was not to ask for money that doesn’t exist, but to ask for fair and equitable treatment of higher education institutions when it comes time to divide the budget. This past academic year, higher education was cut by 11%, while K-12 schools were cut only 3.3%. The trend is likely to continue into the next year, as next year’s proposed budget cuts are still harder on colleges and universities.
It is important for students to participate in activities such as this. Having access to your representatives lets your voice be heard, and the multitude of students arriving to show their support truly helps influence decisions made by the Board of Trustees, who decide the final budget.
