Fargo Student Awarded University of Phoenix Full Ride Scholarship

Thanks to hard work and determination, things are coming easier now to young Henry Huynh — this Wednesday he was presented with the prestigious “Teach It Forward” scholarship, granting him a full ride to University of Phoenix. UoP online classes are challenging, but both Huynh’s life story and academic achievements have proven that he knows a thing or to about living up to challenges.

Eight years ago, he and his mother left their home in Vietnam for Fargo, hoping for a better life and opportunities. They found that. Now Huynh is looking to climb a little higher.

“I always knew I’d go to college,” said the soft-spoken Fargo North High School senior, adding about his mother: “She knew college was needed.”

[...] After learning English as a 10-year-old new American, Huynh pushed himself to climb higher academically, enrolling in several Advanced Placement classes and ending his senior year with a 3.4 grade point average.

“Getting a full ride for four years – what an opportunity,” said counselor Shirley McCaslin, who nominated Huynh. “To really rise to that challenging course work and GPA … from not speaking any English, I think he’s achieved a great deal.”

The success of Huynh’s scholarship award is two-fold: as the relief for his family of the impending financial stresses of college, and as irrefutable proof of an academic job well done. Of all of the UoP online degrees available, Huynh has chosen health care administration as his major, and has hopes of moving his studies to Hawaii somewhere along the way. If his past actions have been any indication, success in both respects seems imminent.
