Spring Breakers Staying Away From Mexico

ARTICLE TOOLS

College Students this year are tightening their belts and not traveling to vacation hot spots like Mexico. The regular party spots such as Cabo San Lucas are really feeling the crunch.  I think it’s probably a combination of a tough economy and the ongoing safety issues that have been plaguing Baja.

For a Mexican tourist hotspot like Cabo, that’s bad news. One of the busiest tourist seasons for the area comes during the months of March and April, coinciding with the American spring break season. Spring break, the long-time college tradition of excess and irresponsibility, is a time that many tourist destinations depend on to bolster profits, banking on the liberal spending habits of Americans on vacation.

Tourism is big business in Mexico, generating over $13.2 billion in 2008, and has grown steadily year over year from just under $10 billion since 2002. According to the Mexican Tourism Board (MTB) this past January saw 2 million international tourists visit the country, up 14.3% from a year earlier, generating $1.192 billion during the month.

There is a travel alert for citizens of the U.S. who plan to travel to Mexico due to increased violence. It basically says, don’t go.  Though the greatest increase in violence has occurred near the U.S. border, areas such as Cabo have not been immune to violent crimes against tourists.  But after all, Mexico has never been considered to be totally safe, so everything with a grain of salt.
